Initially introduced just as a concept vehicle in the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, Tata Nexon has been breaking the mould since it was introduced in the market with a fresh platform to lead the new-age Tatacars, and its hype and buzz can be witnessed in the Nepali market as well where the sub-four-meter-long SUV has proved to be a refined competitor to the Ford Eco Sport and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
Launched on 22nd February 2018 in the Nepali market, the company has sold more than 250 units till date. Utam Prasad Gupta, the Assistant Product Manager-UV at Sipradi Trading Pvt. Ltd. says, “Nexon is one of those future models of Tata which has been launched recently and incorporates a variety of design cues of the concept that was never meant to see the light of day. With luxurious interiors, the most advanced engine in its class and the best in class infotainment, Tata has done its job.” While the Tiago hatchback, Tigor Sedan and the Hexa SUV have helped Tata expand in the previous segments, the Nexon will no doubt storm the highly popular compact SUV sector.”
The Nexon boasts a very coupe-like roofline with the smaller glass-house making it look genuinely refreshing compared to other Tata models. The slim chrome strip that goes along the bottom of the grille and mixes with the headlamps provides the car a wider look with the blazed big arches and the 16-inch alloy wheels which adds more to its wide stance. With LEDs for both headlights and tail lamps, the “ceramic-like” white cladding provides a unique finish to the design element of the Nexon. To complete the rugged crossover’s look, colored bash plates are placed and the 209 mm ground clearance is the highest till date with the length of 3955 mm making it an ideal compact crossover.
Coming to the interiors, the 6.5-inch Harman-developed touchscreen infotainment system seems much advanced with the Land Rover-style rotary knob for the drive modes – City, Eco and Sport. Along with the well bolstered and angled seats, Nexon provides a high-class cabin in terms of the fabric and the plastic used. However, though it’s better than Tiago and Tigor in terms of quality, power window buttons, control stalks and the gloss black finish at the gearbox lever could have been better.The dual tone has provided the model a touch of elegance. As per the company, the model provides about 32 storage options including the bottle holders, the cooling glove box and the cup holders.The inclusion of air vents with speed control and a 12V charging socket at the rear improves the rear seat experience. The boot at 350-liters is huge and the 60:40 split folding rear seats can expand the space up to 690-liters if required. Some other notable features include Smart Key & Push Button Start providing the direct access to doors and boot with just the smart key’s proximity.
With the same six-speed transmission, it’s been more jerk-free with the clutch-less gearshifts through the hydraulic actuators. The diesel AMT with the 1.5-liter diesel unit producing 108bhp of power and 260 Nm of torque helps the driver to move forward in traffic without the constant throttle inputs. The company claims that the Goodyear tires offer sufficient grip with ABS as standard. Though the diesel model seems a little stiffer than its lighter petrol sibling, both are well-damped and offer a relaxing ride on well paved roads and is well-suited for Nepali roads. Considering the safety part, Nexon includes features such as engine immobilizer, central locking,day/night inside rear-view mirror, three-point seatbelt, speed sensing auto lock, etc.
