Valentine’s Day is on its way—are you looking for a place to celebrate with your loved one? There is an amazing variety of restaurants these days, ranging from upscale to casual, and there may even be more by the time this goes to press; it can be hard to make a choice! So here are a few places that fit the brief: good food and a romantic setting, and really, they’re great to visit any time of the year. If you do select one of these places for Valentine’s Day, you might want to consider making a reservation, just in case lots of other couples have the same idea. February 14th is for sure not a night when you want to be caught out without a table at your selected venue!

Cloud 9 Café & Lounge, Hotel Shambala, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Bansbari

So, I know that Hotel Shambala’s main restaurant, Erma, is on the ground floor, and they have some great food, but in my opinion the place to be for a romantic evening is the rooftop, with its infinity pool and amazing view out over the city lights. And I’m pretty sure if you asked nicely with the right amount of sophistication, they’d bring your order up from the restaurant too!
Open from 10 am to 10 pm; tel. no: 01-4650251

Le Sherpa Restaurant, Maharajgunj

Le Sherpa has reopened, just a bit farther north from its previous location, down an alley a little before President House, on the opposite side of the road. The new restaurant is beautifully built, with soaring ceilings and windows to match, and has a large, lovely patio overlooking the garden. It is just perfect for sitting and relaxing. If you haven’t been here yet, this might be the perfect time; fine dining in a setting that won’t disappoint.
Open 10 am to 10 pm, tel. no: 01-4428604

The Rox Restaurant & Bar, Hyatt Regency, Boudha

This restaurant is a great place to get away from it all—the large windows in the beautiful dining room overlooks extensive hotel grounds and the atmosphere is relaxed, yet refined. Even though you’re in the middle of the city, you’re surrounded by so much greenery that it feels as if you’re far, far away. And as befits the signature restaurant of such a good hotel, the food is prepared with care and attention. Ask about the seasonal menu, and enjoy!
Open from 12:30 to 3 pm for lunch, and 6:30 to 10 pm for dinner, on Saturday & Sunday dinner hours only; tel. no: 01-5178334

Vesper Café & Restaurant, Jhamsikhel

This Lalitpur eatery opened in 2009, so it’s been around for a while now and has built a name for itself. In addition to tasty food in a relaxed and attractive atmosphere, they have also become well known for having a good wine selection—and with not just wines but also liqueurs and fine champagnes, there’s sure to be a perfect bottle for this special occasion that will match your food choice—and if in doubt, ask your waiter!
Open daily from noon to 10 pm; tel. no: 01-5548179

Zen Bistro & Café, Bansbari

This newly opened restaurant is pretty cool and manages to be both upscale and casual, and is perfect if you’re looking for something a little bit different—there are different kinds of seating areas for relaxation, ranging from formal to super comfortable, like the big outside couch-beds. You’ll find a variety of menu options, but I suggest the Thai food, which is a specialty here, and features fresh, delicious, and unusual choices with an authentic touch.
Open daily from 11 am to 10 pm; tel. no: 01-4017654

Osteria Piano B, Bhanimandal

Piano B is a great little restaurant in Lalitpur. The owner is Italian, which results in delicious and authentic Italian cooking using specially imported ingredients and unusual touches. The menu changes regularly, but I found the handmade pasta to be a delicious choice, and I’ve had some amazing antipasti here, too. There’s also rooftop seating that’s really pleasant and relaxing.
Open Monday-Saturday 12 noon to 10 pm; tel. no: 01-5000641

Vino Bistro, Radisson Road, Lazimpat

If you would like something a little more relaxed, but still classy, I can’t recommend this place highly enough. It’s cozy and friendly, with great casual eating options and a huge wine selection that will fit every budget and taste. In fact, of all the places on this list, it’s probably the most affordable, while still being awesome and special. The wine-barrel tables are a fun touch, and there’s a cozy nook up a small set of stairs that makes a perfect romantic corner, though I usually prefer the long bar where I can chat with the personable staff.
Open daily from 9 am to 11 pm; tel. no: 01-4435982
