Book Review By: Mihir Malla

Written by the current President of the U.S.A. when he was a multi-billion dollar real estate mogul, ‘Think like a Billionaire’ is where Donald Trump talks about his own experience on how to think and act like an intelligent money maker. It talks about how the instincts of a billionaire work and what is the secret key to success, money and happiness. The book advises the readers to love their work and that if they don’t, they are probably in the wrong job. It further tells the readers to treat every decision like a lover and always be curious. The book is divided into 3 main parts: Real Estate, Money and the Business of Life.

In this book, Trump quotes his father, “Know everything about what you are doing”. So, ‘Think like a Billionaire’ is a repository for knowledge regarding real estate development. It is a step-by-step guide to becoming a successful real-estate developer, and narrates logically from ‘how to pick a location’ to ‘how to sell a house’. Each chapter starts with a new “How to….” as a journey to building a real estate empire in the Trump way. This book provides a number of interesting insights on managing money and investment for becoming rich and staying rich.

The book further talks about how to motivate yourself financially, how to find out if your employees are loyal, how to say “no” and how to plan for retirement. Then the book moves on to advice on personal behavioral concerns so one can have a balanced life in work, marriage and friendship. The book talks about the importance of dreaming big and living your dreams. Trump shows his hate for the abbreviation ‘TGIF’ saying that you have to love your work, work more and work harder. He talks about a billionaire’s mindset:  don’t take vacations, don’t sleep more than you have to and make your entire mind, heart and body focus on your work. The book’s focal point is that if you succeed in thinking and acting like a billionaire, you will surely end up becoming one.

It talks about Trump’s choices, likes and dislikes.  Trump seems to have one simple rule in business and life, “Always pay for the best, work with the best, live with the best, speak with the best and sell to the best”. Needless to say, Trump goes to the best restaurants, drinks the best coffee and plays with the best golf equipment. He gives credit to his hard work, perseverance and most importantly, his extraordinary billionaire mindset, which is best explained in this book. It even describes one week in the life of the billionaire indicating how he lives a productive, entertaining and luxurious life. It also takes you behind-the-scenes of his reality TV show, the Apprentice from the end of Season 1 and into Season 2. Trump expresses his utmost desire to help other people succeed in life and join the billionaire’s club like he did or at least be a millionaire.  In conclusion, this book is a perception of a successful billionaire and sales person who believes that with suitable knowledge, discipline and hard work, others too can become rich.
