Astik Sherchan

Astik, as a child, used to sketch a lot and especially loved to make sketches of clothes. He grew up reading a lot of fashion magazines and he was really inspired by the 90’s designers like Coco Chanel. So, to turn his paper creations into products, Astik went to study in India and Paris. He got a degree in fashion designing from Paris and worked in various sectors of fashion for almost 5 years. With the experience he gained in Paris, Astik headed back to Nepal to create his own designs. He opened a store in Lazimpat which opened a path for him to create something of his own with complete freedom. He started out with Astik Designs and later opened Pulchowk Creations, which are two different lines of fashion.

His personal style

Astik likes to keep it simple and clean. He doesn’t like wearing too many colors and feels comfortable in clothes that perfectly fit his body. You can find him walking around town in a sweater paired with trousers or jeans and he prefers quality over fashion. Astik chooses something that is made of a good fabric even if the outfit looks plain.

Professional designs

Since Astik designs clothes for women, his personal style doesn’t have any impact on his professional designs. But when it comes to turning a design into a product, Astik likes to put in a lot of effort to ensure quality. Well made clothes have always grabbed his attention and he likes to do the same while creating an outfit for his clients. He believes that an outfit should always be made of good fabric and it should always be clean and organized.

Where he buys his stuff

Astik usually gets his employees to make outfits for him so that they get extra opportunities to polish their skills. He also likes to look around for different outfits and it doesn’t matter where he buys them as long as the outfits are of good quality. He believes that people should get outfits from the designers as well as buy from the local stores which will contribute in helping the country’s economy grow.

His inspiration

We can see a lot of unnecessary decorations and color combinations and designs in an outfit these days. So Astik doesn’t follow a trend but does the complete opposite. Since Astik is a really neat guy, he likes his outfits clean and simple. He usually gets inspired by different forms of art and almost everything, for instance watching a movie refreshes his mind to create a new design. So anything that catches his eye becomes an inspiration for him.

New collection

He is planning to launch a new store, Pulchowk 3, by next month. He has been working on a new collection solely for that store. He believes Pulchowk 3 will be a new idea in the Nepali market as an entire bungalow will be used for the store, which will have different items on different floors.

Bina Ghale

Bina started out in the fashion world as a model in 2001. She did a lot of fashion shows, music videos and TVCs after she won the title of Super Model Nepal in 2002. She had always been drawn to fashion and modeling was her only way to connect to the glamorous world back then. In 2005 she went to India and completed her Bachelor’s degree in fashion designing from NIFD Delhi. After completing her studies she worked in Delhi at a fashion house for a year and returned to Nepal. She then started producing designs for retail shops in Kathmandu. Thousands of people wore her designs from 2009 to 2011 when the term Fashion Designer wasn’t that popular in Nepal. But it didn’t matter to Bina because she was happy just designing and doing the work. Finally in 2012, with encouragement from her friends, she launched Gabi.

Her personal style

“I would say my personal style is urban chic,” says Bina. She spends most of her time in the studio, so she prefers wearing comfortable clothes that suit her lifestyle. She usually wears a shirt/ t-shirt paired with leggings and sneakers or loafers. But during events, she loves to doll up and wear dresses with accessories and the perfect pair of shoes.

Professional designs

As a designer she designs for the market, but her professional designs tend to have her personal stylistic touch.

Where she buys her stuff

Like most girls, Bina likes to buy her clothes wherever she finds them. She also shops from international websites and if she can’t find something she likes, she just makes it herself.

Her inspiration

Bina likes to be in touch with the international trends and tries to follow the trend from around the world as much as she can. Sometimes a color inspires her or a cut that pops out does. “I’m always looking to incorporate art and fashion so things just fall into place when I sit to design,” says Bina.

Tenzin Bhutia

While at grad school in Delhi Tenzin suddenly realized that studying commerce wasn’t his thing and this realization helped him kick start his journey to become what he is today. He had always had a passion for fashion designing, so he moved to Bangalore to study designing and later returned to Nepal and worked at Himalayan Couture. Lately, he has been freelancing from his studio at home.

His personal style

Tenzin likes to mix and match with his outfits. He usually mixes western and Asian street styles and generally combines the street fashion from Japan, Korea and Europe. But fashion put aside, Tenzin prefers to wear something comfortably stylish so that people actually know he is a designer from the way he dresses alone. And usually he follows the latest trends and does a lot of research about what’s in to look his best.

Professional designs

When it comes to creating professional designs, Tenzin thinks like a woman so as to get the perfect design for his female clients. He keeps the conservative beliefs and traditions in mind when designing an outfit for a Nepali woman, which is why most of his designs reflect Nepali-ness in the person wearing it.

Where he buys his stuff

From roadside shops in New Road to the grand Civil Mall, Tenzin buys his clothes from everywhere in Nepal. If he sees something he likes, he buys it without a second thought but comfort always gets top priority when choosing his clothes. He also does online shopping and gets his friends from abroad to bring outfits that are not available in Nepal.

His new collection

After his show in Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Tenzin is currently working on a new collection for the UK market. The collection he is working on will soon be displayed in February at “Fariya”, a shop based in the UK.

Pechi Zitutsang

Pechi doesn’t believe she is a fully fledged designer. She has a store called Dorpal Apparels in Boudha which is a boutique and an antique gallery selling ancient idols and sculptures. She has had opportunities to design clothes for our former Miss Nepal like Ishani Shrestha and Shristi Shrestha.

Her personal style

Pechi loves dressing up casually and doesn’t go after brands. She just focuses on being comfortable. You can find her wearing track suits and slippers to work and usually prefers comfort over fashion.

Professional designs

Comfortable, causal look might be her priority when it comes to dressing herself up, but she designs outfits she thinks people really want. What her clients’ want is her priority when designing outfits for them so she says her personal style and professional designs are complete opposite.

Where she buys her stuff

Like most designers, Pechi also buys clothes from abroad. She asks her friends from abroad to get some outfits that cannot be found in Nepal.

Her inspiration

Travelling is one of the things Pechi loves. So, she gets a lot of inspiration for her designs from things she sees around while travelling. Also, the magnificent color combinations found in nature inspire her to create unique designs.
