In recent years, many individuals have sought the help of the internet to express themselves through various websites. One of these widely used sites is YouTube. Individuals persevere to make videos and upload it, making it available for the rest of the world to see. Some also turned this hobby into a profession, uploading videos on a daily basis. This trend of “YouTubing” also made its way into Nepal, and recently there have been a growing number of such YouTubers gaining fame in our own country.

One of these renowned Youtubers is Sisan Baniya. A videographer turned filmmaker, Sisan formed his own channel, which he started more than a year ago. His videos, mostly vlogs are well captured, edited and are thoroughly entertaining. Furthermore, his unique ability to keep viewers constantly engaged with his charming and humble personality is one more plus point. Living decided to talk to the man himself, to delve into his inspirational life.

L: When did you start making videos?

SB: I have been a person wanting to express myself, one way or the other. Recording videos was always my hobby, commentating on everything that was going on in my life. During 2005, when I used to work at my family’s handicraft shop, I still remember I used to make vines, and I would share them amongst my friends. The comfort I felt, when I had a camera in my hand, is what drove me into making more videos along with the encouragement I got from my friends. I used to make certain types of videos during my time in college but I didn’t know what to do with them. When I first won at a Movie festival in college for a short documentary that I made about the school, I wanted to get into videography, but I started from photography and slowly worked my way up. The fact that I didn’t know how to utilize what I loved most was my major drawback, but making videos was something I enjoyed doing all the time, even when I was in college.

L: How did you start uploading vlogs and videos on YouTube?

SB: I used to make several videos before YouTube, but because I didn’t know how to use them, they only kept piling up. Only after I started watching videos of Casey Neistat, a YouTuber famous for his vlogs did I realize how I could make use of such videos so I decided to give it a go. I didn’t expect much from this, it was only for my own enjoyment that I uploaded my first two videos. But the response I got for my second one was overwhelming. The video was a vlog, where I returned a picture I had taken of a small girl. The response I got was what made me realize that this was way bigger than what I had expected. From then on, I knew what to do with my videos, so uploading such vlogs on YouTube became a hobby.

L: What do you include in your videos that make them so unique to the viewers?

SB: The sole purpose of making vlogs and funny videos is for the entertainment of the viewers. I think I try to engage with the audience as much as I can. I chose to specialize in vlogs because it gives a first person insight,  it makes the audience  feel and experience everything that I am going through, and I try to make it even more entertaining by doing things people don’t get to do on a daily basis. Making social issues a major part of my videos I think is what makes my channel unique.  I believe that along with entertainment, videos should also start discussions on the major flaws in our society. As the internet plays  a major role in creating awareness among viewers, I think that such issues should be discussed among them.

L: Any advice to young YouTubers in Nepal?

SB: The most important thing is to never give up. Hardwork pays off, just give your all to what you are doing; it may take time but eventually, you will get results. Just follow your instincts, get started, and you will realize that it is not easy, but if you give it your all, you will get positive results. Being a YouTuber is not easy. Especially when starting off, you have to be consistent, you have to provide what the viewers want to see, but you should always develop videos with the motive to entertain the audience, not for your own benefit. Nothing is impossible, you shouldn’t give up, you should chase your dream and you will achieve your goal.
